Batch traceability: requirements to integrate the operation

Editorial illustration: Batch traceability: requirements to integrate the operation

Tracking a batch requires relating inputs, transformations and outputs. A batch field in the register does not, by itself, allow you to identify where a material was used or to whom it was sent.

How to evaluate this decision

Map fractionation, mixing, repackaging and return according to the operation. Define the events that need to be logged and the identifiers that remain stable. Capture must occur at the point where the link can be confirmed. Reconstructing relationships later, simply by proximity of dates, can produce traceability that appears complete and is unreliable.

Criteria for comparing proposals

  • Origin: link receipt, reported batch and available documentation.
  • Transformation: record consumption and generation of new batches, including authorized losses and adjustments.
  • Destination: link shipping, customer and return without losing previous links.

A scenario to discuss with the supplier

Hypothetical example: a batch is divided into several orders. A source query must find all known destinations, while an order query must retrieve the batch that supplied it.

What to validate upon delivery

Use a known motion set and check two-way navigation. Test corrections and incomplete records; the system should declare gaps, not invent links to close the chain.

Prepare the conversation about the project

Report events, identifiers and inventory or production systems involved to Quantum9. Specific regulatory requirements must be validated by those responsible for the company and translated into technical delivery criteria.
