Develop a multi-company SaaS: scope beyond registration

Plan for data isolation, plans, billing, support, and operations when contracting to develop a SaaS platform.

A SaaS platform is not ready just because several companies manage to create an account. Each organization needs to operate its data securely, understand its usage limits, and receive support. Billing, cancellation and access recovery have been part of the product since the beginning.

Define the unit you sell

Does your customer pay by company, user, volume or combination of these factors? The answer changes permissions, quotas and billing. Describe what happens when a plan is reduced, a subscription expires, or an administrator leaves the company. Avoid leaving these decisions implicit in the code.

Isolation needs to be verifiable

The supplier must demonstrate that one organization does not read or alter data from another, including via API, files and reports. Hiding buttons is not access control. Include tests with two different clients and profiles in the acceptance, as well as trails for administrative actions.

Separate commercial MVP from unnecessary infrastructure

The first release can have a single plan and a well-resolved main journey. This doesn't require immediately building dozens of integrations or a distributed architecture. However, backup, recovery, access limits and monitoring should not depend on a promise for later.

  • Customer input and member invitation.
  • Subscription activation, renewal and termination.
  • Import and export of necessary data.
  • Incident response and handling.

Costs that appear after the first sale

Storage, messaging, processing, and support grow in different ways. Estimate usage scenarios and establish alerts. An apparently profitable monthly fee can lose margin when a customer uses resources that are far above standard. The proposal must explain how to measure this consumption without exposing data from other organizations.

Before hiring

Bring a buyer hypothesis, the recurring problem, and examples of the work the platform will replace. Quantum9 can organize the first version and its dependencies. To test demand before expanding the scope, see the MVP validation roadmap.
