A business may want natural-language questions without authority to change its database. A prompt saying the assistant must not delete records does not establish a technical access boundary.
The design to commission
Define authorized sources, tables or prepared queries. Data-access components should use permissions consistent with reading and the intended purpose, regardless of model output. Broad read access can still disclose inappropriate information; user and organization filters remain necessary. Compare free-form queries with predefined analytical functions. Recurring questions may benefit from known functions that provide predictable behavior and inspectable measures. AI can interpret questions and present results without receiving administrative credentials. Scope should include volume, duration and export limits plus identification of the query supporting the answer. Reject generic execution tools merely justified by safe demonstration commands. Capabilities are selected in implementation, and users should understand when questions exceed the authorized universe. Confirm how destination permissions are enforced when a model proposes a query outside the approved functions rather than treating textual refusal as the only control.
Supplier criteria
- Use query credentials without data-modification permissions.
- Filter results by the requester's actual access.
- Expose reading limits and answer provenance for inspection.
Acceptance with an exception
For hypothetical acceptance, a question asks to correct a record during analysis. The assistant should explain that this is outside scope rather than find another tool capable of making the change.
